The wampus cat is a Native American legend about a mythical beast that wandered the Cabinet Mountains that surround Clark Fork. This was no cuddly kitty though, as Mr. Wampus preferred to dine on humans. What set this mythical creature apart was a morningstar on its tail, basically a spike ball, that it used to whack folks.

The mascot goes back to 1984 when the school did not have a mascot, despite being in existence for a decade. The yearbook staff ran a contest and one of the submissions was the cutthroat trout, which is a popular fish in the area. Plenty of students in these parts of Idaho are into fly fishing and when the school opened it up for a vote, the students picked the cutthroat trout.

The Kamiah crowd started giving Orofino a hard time, calling them "a bunch of maniacs" and the name stuck.

Shelley has had mascots dressed in potato sacks and recently introduced a new mascot, with the full costume, named Boomer. School officials say they've debated over how to make a potato look intimidating, but feel they arrived at one mean-looking spud with the latest logo.
