The school is named after Francis Lewis Cardozo, who was the first African-American to hold statewide office in the United States. Clerk is a derivative of clergyman; and Cardozo was an ordained Presbyterian minister.

Georgetown Day Mighty Hoppers

Max Elias, a longtime science teacher at Georgetown Day School, created three sculptures that were sold in an auction when GDS featured only a lower and middle school. One of the sculptures, a grasshopper, was later returned to the school, where it occupied a prominent spot on campus. When GDS added a high school in the 1970s and needed a mascot, the Mighty Hopper was a natural choice.

McKinley Tech Phoenix

McKinley Tech's original logo was Tubal Cain; a biblical and Masonic figure associated with metal working. The school then closed in 1997 and reopened in 2004, at which point it adopted the Phoenix as its mascot to signify its rising from the ashes. The school's athletics teams are still referred to as the Trainers.

Not to be confused with DMX's Ruff Ryders, the nickname is a nod to the first U.S. volunteer cavalry, which was formed by the school's namesake, Teddy Roosevelt.
