Brookings, S.D.
Watertown, S.D.

The I-29 rivalry has been a trademark of the Eastern Dakota Conference since its inception. Both teams have won South Dakota Class AA state titles within the past dozen years, with Watertown knocking off Brookings for the state crown in 2001. "Funny thing is," said Brookings coach Lee Schmidt, who has been on staff there for 26 years, "the coaching staffs are the best of friends. We travel together to clinics, work camps together. The communities ... there's some animosity."

Groton, S.D.
Aberdeen, S.D.

Private (Roncalli) vs. public (Groton), small town (Groton) vs. big town (Aberdeen), this one has a little of it all. Northeast Conference foes have played for high stakes in the last decade. Roncalli won Class 11B in 2005 and 2006, and Groton was the state runner-up in 2007 and 2008. In 2007-08, Groton avenged a regular-season loss to Roncalli in the postseason. When Roncalli and Groton meet, it's a big draw from several other surrounding towns as well.

Sioux Falls, S.D.

It's impossible to do a best rivalries in South Dakota without one from Sioux Falls on the list, with the success and history of that city's high schools - O'Gorman, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Washington. One of those four schools has won the last eight South Dakota AA titles, with six of those featuring an All-Sioux Falls championship. But right now, Roosevelt vs. Washington rises above the city's other rivalries. For the last four years, the city championship has come down to those two schools and they've combined to win five of the past six state titles. Adding to the story, both head coaches in the Roosevelt-Washington rivalry spent time at the other school as well.
