The annual Cony-Gardiner matchup is now an exhibition game on the eve of the regular season because the teams are in different divisions, but it's still one of Maine's biggest games each year. The rivalry celebrated its 135th game this fall. Each year, proceeds from the game go to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Cure. Cony leads the series 68-57-10.
In 2011, Portland and Deering celebrated the 100th anniversary of their annual Thanksgiving Day game. Well, at least Deering celebrated after its 33-0 win. Then-Portland coach Mike Bailey felt Deering ran up the score, and the team's coaches didn't shake hands afterward. All that for a game that takes place after the playoffs and doesn't even count in the standings. Portland leads the series 54-39-7.
Separated by a bridge connecting their respective towns, the annual Thornton-Biddeford game is aptly known as the Battle of the Bridge. During the week of the game, cheerleaders from each school decorate their end of the bridge with school colors. Per tradition, the losing coach presents the "Battle of the Bridge" trophy to the winning school the next week. Thornton owns an all-time record of 55-40-9.
